I was pleasantly surprised to find that DVR Bulletin was listed as one of the top 100 Analyst Blogs by Technobabble 2.0. The blogger, Jonny Brentwood, is a consultant to Edelman, a PR firm.
Brentwood calculated the number of RSS subscribers, Google PageRank, Technorati scores and Digg points for each blog and came up with a weighted score for each blog.
Ok, I’m actually number 98, but I still thought it was cool just to be on the list. I’m even considering making my own T-Shirt via CafePress.com saying “I’m Number 98!”.
One commenter pointed out that some of the top bloggers on the list may not the “quality bloggers in their area” while others get “traction just for who they work for.” Which I completely agree with. Just working at a top analyst firm, like Jupiter, Gartner or Forrester can put you in the top 20.
Perhaps another idea is to have a poll or maybe some other way to figure out which analyst blogs are more influential or have better content.
Looking over the number 1 blog, Groundswell from Forrester, I found some of the postings were merely promotional about Forrester events or webcasts and not chock full of info or analysis like I would expect.
As an independent analyst, this is pretty much my own work and my own business. And since this blog is focused on a very specific topic–digital video recorders (DVRs) and other time-shifting or place-shifting technologies–I don’t expect this to be a huge hit.
Some of my blogging authority is diluted because I actually write another blog, Digital Media Bulletin, which focuses on Internet video and research and analysis of new media topics. I’m not sure, but if DMB was also included in the Technobabble 2.0 Top 100 Analyst Blogs, I hope I could have ranked higher.
Also, most in-house analysts have a duty to promote their own research reports (or webcasts) rather than blogging about their competitors. As an independent analyst, I don’t have to worry about making my bosses angry by writing about research from a competitor.
The Top 100 list is good, however, since I can now browse the list and subscribe to some new blogs I may not have heard about. I think Brentwood at Technobabble 2.0 did some very nice work in compiling this and applaud his efforts.
Full Disclosure: I work as an analyst for Multimedia Research Group as an IPTV analyst and editor of the IPTV Bulletin. But as a contractor, I also do work with other research companies.
